Hi, my clunky old Scott WW catalogue does not show these. Any help in identifying what I presume to be revenue or tax stamps from India would be great. They are all embossed with some type of seal. Thanks, yakboomer.

They are revenue stamps. Attractive ones at that. I can see that at least of them have received a pressure seal cancel.

That's me. Stating the obvious, that was already stated.

These were general revenue stamps. You won't find them in the general postage stamp catalogues, although they are listed in the Barefoot catalogues of Commonwealth revenues. The low values like yours are only worth a few cents each: they were used in huge numbers.

This is what the full version of your embossed cancellation looked like:

There were other types as well:

(This 500 Rupee stamp was equivalent to about $US200 at the time.) And some more values:

According to Forbin, yours are from the 1868 series. They should perf 14. The set has 26 values, through 1000R, and it looks like there might be two watermark varieties.

Examples of your design, but in lilac on blue paper, perf 15, would be from the earlier series of 1866. That is a much smaller set.

All of this information is almost 100 years old, so take it for what it is worth.

Thanks for the info Cjd. I won these on ebay on the 14th of April. The seller sent me 3 stamps I did not bid on instead of these. It took over 2 weeks of emails to wake him up to that fact. I finally got them in the mail a couple of days ago. Anyone can make a mistake but ignoring complaints really ticks me off. Anyway I liked the looks of these and have added them to my small Commonwealth accumulations.
