Pretty Postcard

I originally got this for its Streetcar RPO, but the postcard picture is just beautiful.

It is a nice postcard ... and I certainly like the Cleveland Circuit RPO postmark. Beyond that, I find it interesting that the subject of the postcard is depicting Ireland, yet the postcard was printed in Germany.

But wait! There's more to it than that. According to this website, the card is probably a Winsch back type postcard, created by John O. Winsch, even though no copyright or name is included on the example shown. Mr. Winsch is said to have been in the postcard business from 1907-1915, with cards from 1907-1909 not showing his name.

It's worth researching if it's a Winsch card - some sell in the hundreds of dollars. These four Winsch Halloween cards sold for $433 on ebay in 2011.



By the way, an estimated 85% of the world's high-quality embossed postcards were printed in Germany 1908-1914, regardless of the location of the image. World War I cut off that source and ended that business permanently; the end of the War was the beginning of the "white border" postcards, of distinctly lower quality.

It's not uncommon to find German-manufactured postcards with tourist views of Great Britain from the Edwardian period. Many were printed in various works in Saxony, for British companies. I recently bought an old album with many 1905-1935 cards, and there were several in there.

For some reason, it is much harder to get Halloween cards than for any other special day?

I once knew a dealer who collected only Halloween because they were quite elusive to find.

It's a beautiful card front and back! I'd be proud to own it! Congrats and thank you for the winsch tip! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for them!

I have seen specifically the Winsch Halloween cards go for a lot, but anything outside of the Halloween ones are not as in demand.

I don't know whether this is a Winsch Postcard or not and probably will never know, I just know it is extremely beautiful, better than the pic. shows and am glad to have it.
