I was looking through a big pile of these and I found today was this weird looking triangle. Is this known or significant? Here is the whole stamp:

It is one of many variations. The originals have no triangle, than the later ones have the triangle but the lines inside vary depending on issue. |

It's type 3 or 4, but fascinating that part of the outer frame is missing. I have never seen this before, myself. Could be a plate engraving error. |

Very possible it is a forgery. These were type III that originated in Canada. The type I and II were also forged. |

Ha-Ha! I am referring to the missing ink on the outside left of the outer triangle.. (Riggsy thank you but I'm very well versed on these issues) |

Full descriptions help. I could stare at these all day long and not see anything. Perhaps you could circle the area in question next time? |

I see it and I have never seen/noticed one like that before. I'll have to look at mine closer. Actually the ink is missing off of two lines. |

I'd be more interested in the curly hair deal on his throat, or is that debris on the scanner ? |

One possible cause of the missing section of the outer border of the triangle is dried ink. A problem wiping/cleaning the plate can leave a small amount of ink behind which dries and fills in the grove that holds the ink. In postal stationery this effect is referred to as a 'shallow die' but is more often promoted as an error missing (fill in the blank). |

ILS, your stamp is a Type IV. There were 329 Type IV plates produced from 28 different transfer rolls. Several of the transfer roll reliefs developed relief breaks and the outer lines of the triangle was the most common location for these breaks. |
