Whom Is A Member Of A Local Stamp Club?

For those interested in finding out if a stamp club is in their area. Go to the American Philatelic Society website at: www.stamps.org Then go to the Clubs & Societies link on the left hand side. Of course if there are 2 or more collectors in the same area they could start their own club.

Trigger - that's not a bad way to start a club. Run an ad or two, post a notice at the PO, etc. and you'd probably find enough collectors to get something good going!

I used to belong to a club in Shreveport, but since I move over 100 miles away I don't go anymore.

After a small discussion on starting the "CLUB" it appears to be a very big challenge.
To call it a club or anything is very costly.
The insurance is one$$$issue, the meeting place is a small matter but then, as an organisation with minors in it there is also the dreaded working with children's check for each adult.
Emma's friend looks like joining us soon and for now we be getting together as friends from time to time. No club. No cost. No cost= happier parents.

I have been a member of the Ottawa Philatelic Society (OPS) for four years. The previous three I was the Treasurer and I was recently elected as the Vice-President.

The OPS is Canada's oldest (est. 1891) and one of the largest (90+ members meeting weekly 11 month of the year) local stamp clubs. I love it. I get more grest deals and learn more about stamps and covers (and help others). If you have the opportunity to be a member of a local stamp club, join... you'll not regret it.

I am also a member of the APS... an excellent value!

I'm not a member of the regular club here in the city, but I do take my stepson and my daughter to the juvenile club, and help out when possible, including answering any questions the kids have.

I am a member of the Springfield Stamp Club, its not very local about an hour away but worth the drive once a week. The knowledge from the "old times" can not be found anywhere else, as well as great deals and lots of fun. I agree with David if you have the opportunity to join a club do so

I am not a member of a club because the ones I see are expensive with annual fees.
I have heard that some clubs offer a "honor system mailing club". I think this is where a box or envelope full of stamps gets mailed to one member with the option to buy. Inside the package is a list of people with their mailing addresses to send a check to if any are purchased. This package gets mailed around with the hopes of sales and new stamps.

I would love to know if there is a club that offers trades with the same honor system. Any extras would go into the package along with a mailing list. The next person takes what they want BUT must contribute their own extra stamps so the package is never left empty.

In re your question about an "honor system" for buying stamps? Well, years ago the APS (American Philatelic Society) had such a system. I got many stamps from the booklets they mailed to me about once a month which were returned via mail and with payment. You have to join the APS though in order to participate. They probably still have this service going. npfw....

Yes the APS does still has sales book circuit. We here have submitted to be an affiliate club/chapter of the APS and are awaiting confirmation of acceptance. Membership to the APS on an individual basis is $35 annually (I think). You can go to www.stamps.org to learn more about this institution, plus you can search and see if there are any clubs near you to visit or join. My stamp club, Springfield Philatelic Society, is only $15 a year.

Cynthia the dues in my club are a meagre 10 dollars per year,we start all auction lots at 20 percent of catalog...its not about the money its about helping other collectors ....and having fun !!

I'm a bit slower than you spedwad it would take me 4 day to get to Triggermob's W.A. stamp club that's if the donkey takes the carrot

Harry, I believe Sped has packed his camel and moved elsewhere..i think his father or mother wondered where all the stamps he asked for were coming from !!
