Post Office Cancels New Issues [pun Intended]

On the front page of the March 23 issue of Linns (mailed to me on March 9, arrived today), there is a story that the U.S. Postal Service has postponed several issues originally planned for this year.

One of them honored one of my favorite artists, Edward Hopper



We often hear complaints about the increasing number of new releases and the difficulty of collecting them all.

My question is this... is it possible that a reduction in the number of 2009 issues could be good for the postal service? good for the hobby?

Does the post service release information about which stamps make profits? Or how much profit?

Thoughts?

Kirk, I can't see the USPS losing money on any stamps if it sells them. Printing stamps is almost like printing money, except they are a one shot deal (unless Bob gets hold of them with his glue stick).

I think most of the consumers of stamps are still non-collectors and they really don't care much about the design of the stamp. The post office I think could still print most of the planned new issues/designs but instead limit the supply that goes out to ensure that every design gets a chance to be printed. For me, the more variety in design, the better for collectors.
