theres a wonderful article in the August Scott Monthly titled something like "How our hobby began"..i mean people started collecting right from the git go..American kids were pasting used stamps in their notebooks in the 1850's..Scott published his first stamp catalog in 1868....

I once read that in 1840, a woman placed an advertisement in the London Times asking for used Penny Blacks. She was saving them to cover a wall in her home with the stamps!

i did not realize the penny black was only sold for postage for 1 year..and yet how many were printed ? Gazillions !
