The impish side of me says she looks more like the Wicked Witch from OZ or "wicked". The serious side says that only young, unmarried girls wore light colors in their portraits. Matrons, regardless of age, wore black until sometime in the 1910-1920 era. Maybe a Victorian influence, yes, but very prevalent in the US from 1860-forward.

At what age would one be considered a Matron, Barb?

Cynical: I recalled there was a lady in black,
I could not recall the "appleby" flag,
so yes, I searched "black"

In Western Australia the "appleby covers" are famous,
I had a chance to pick one up 10 years ago, at auction
because I liked it, but passed in at $15.
I didn't realise then just how famous they were,
otherwise I would have gone higher.

matron - in old american usage didn't mean an old woman. It ment a married woman. The current connotation is much different.

Thanks Barb.
I had assumed a woman with grandchildren.
(not far off the mark :)
For some reason Lady Catherine de Bourgh from
"Pride and Prejudice" always springs to mind.

Not his best work though Stallzer,
He was awaiting the release of the Australian KG5 sideface
stamp issue in Australia, and sent his wife? an impression
of the stamp on the cover.
That was his masterpiece in my view.

BTW "Appleby" covers now have a reserve at auction of $120 each

I think I posted this postcard way back, but I croped a close up of my grandfather all the way to the right. The whole postcard is of men wearing their gals hats and the gals wearing the guys hats. It must have been from a dance or something because they were all dressed up.

Very cool thread! I find old phots very interesting and have really enjoyed looking at all of the ones posted by fellow members of SCF!

Here is one from my collection featuring a very classy picture of a pretty girl. I like the coloured embellishments on this one, a nice little touch!

Have a good one,

Skilo54
