I was wondering if anyone has had experience with helping a child who is mentally handicapped start a collection? I am trying to figure out how to involve my daughter. She has been soaking the stamps off the paper. She's doing a good job, but I don't want her to do this all the time. I hope someone out there has experience in this.

I don't have any experience, but I do know for sure that stamps are very colourful and are great learning tools, so maybe get an album full of stamps and go through each one of them while teaching her what buildings are these, what animals are these and so forth? Just my suggestion though.. and welcome to the forum of course..

Hi James

When I was in University ( befor joined the Air Force) I worked with autistic and other developly chanlenged children at different levels. I found patience was the key in working with them and that with time and effort almost anything is possibe.

Does she have an album yet?

I have a couple that I won with a lot off ebay that I not using maybee one of these would be appropriate for her.

Good Morning,

The album I have for Amy is one my wife got at a garage sale. It is a "Traveler" album by Harris. The most recent stamp picture in it is from about 1974-75. She seems to be satisfied with it. I wanted to bring it up to date because many of the stamp we accummulated are more recent stamps that are not in the book.

Jim, some of us here might be able to use your mail address..as to your daughters album I know it can be frusrating for a child when they do not see the a picture of the stamp they have in the album...one suggestion is you use stock cards by country for your daughters collection..then she can mount them any way she likes ..phil

Just had another though.

I have lots of duplicates of the older stamps and I actually have that traveler album. I'll see if I can round some up for her. She'll be able to use that album until we find her another one.

Let me know if this is ok with you. Should be able to have some in the mail early next week.

Is there a particular subject or thing your Daughter likes. For example Animals, fish, Flowers etc..

Thanks for all the ideas and help. I don't know the policy as far as posting address', but I'll gladly let anyone that wants my address have it. As far as Amy's likes, she loves butterflies, animals especially dog and cats and flags of countries, but she doesn't really care too much what kind of stamps she has. This forum is fantastic. I'm glad I found it when I did. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. It's almost like family.

Thanks to everyone

Jim

Hey James

Here's Mine <email removed to protect it from spambots - please use forum mail to correspond with other members>

The other album I have I goes to 1990 or so I'll send it if you with shipping on me. The only thing is that it's a two post album and I dont find that it lays flat but you could possibly put the pages in a different album.

Anyhow let me know I've started an envelope of stamp that she will find in her traveler album.

One suggestion...let HER tell YOU what she wants to do and how she wants to do it. I doubt anything turns off a young collector faster than an adult telling a child what or how to collect.

Charles.
