You have just finished perfecting your way-back machine and you are ready for some time travel. You decide to go back in time to buy some classic US stamps. You set the dial to 1893 and jump in to get some post office fresh Columbians. Once you arrive at the main post office in Boston, you realize that all your money is from 100 years in the future. Luckily you are able to sell your baseball cap and jacket for 17 cents. Unfortunately the postmaster doesn't have any more of the 15c stamps, He has only the 1c-10c values.

How many ways can you purchase 3 Columbian stamps with 17 cents?

for investment purposes, I would buy two 6 cent stamps and the 5 cent, just like modern_who, since the catalog values put these 6 cents highest.. I think..

Is the answer to the bonus question 17 one cent stamps blocks with selvedges bounding them all together?

"Plate blocks" are blocks of four or larger with selvedge attached showing the number of the plate used to print the stamps.

For this issue, the standard format for collecting plate number blocks includes the printer's imprint and a repeated letter.
These are blocks of 8 (2 rows by 4 columns).

I would ask the postmaster if I could see some full sheets of the 1c and 2c stamps, and possibly return home with one of these:



which catalogs for $900 MNH or better yet two of these:



which catalog $1025 MNH each! So your best investment would be to come back with all 1c stamps,
including two blocks of eight with the plate number, imprint and letter, post office fresh and never hinged.

A never hinged single 1c stamp cats for $60, so your total haul would catalog at $2110.

Nice deal for your ratty old jacket and baseball cap!

Next trip - before you go, buy some beat up Morgan silver dollars at their melt value (struck before 1893!) and bring those along.
