Since I've begun collecting Route 66 themed postmarks & covers I have run across a few postmarks for the Lincoln Highway the 1st coast to coast US highway. This topic is an easy extension, especially since route 66 & lincoln highway run parallel for a few blocks in Joliet IL and I am a Lincoln topical collector. I was surprised to see in today's USPS Postal Bulletin a postmark for June 18 in South Bend IN commemorating the 17th annual LHA conference. I will be sending off for this postmark soon, once I design a new cachet.

Does anyone here live in a community along the historic Lincoln Highway?

Another precancel challenge for you! More involved then Route 66 but less known.

Yeah, Mike it does have that characteristic of being less known. I do not know much about the lincoln highway, so I would need to do some research to start a precancel collection for it. Here are 2 covers I have on the subject. I might start on it after I get my Route 66 exhibit finished. I just may have to join a precancel society.

One road we have is the Great River Road along the length of the Mississippi River. That would be a challenge.

Mike,
I've followed a portion of The Great River Road in Illinois and Missouri. There are a lot of scenic by-ways and blue highways in the US. You really get a view of America via these roadways. Much like taking a train across the country, the tracks follow our expansion across the country. Many highways and towns are where they are because of the railroads. I have always enjoyed traveling by car and seeing the sights through the windshield. I could go on and on.

I've been on the Great River Road in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Louisiana, and scenic in all.

A few years ago I used to live along the Lincoln Hwy in Nebraska. We have since moved and we now live along Hwy 50 in CO. Noticed one of the news shows is doing a spot where their reporter is traveling Hwy 50 across country.

jleverin,
welcome to the forum. Nebraska or Colorado would be nice places to live from what I hear. Please vote on my new poll regarding the Lincoln Highway. I think US 50 runs parallel to the Lincoln Highway.
