February 20, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the First American (John Glenn) to orbit the Earth.

Here's an interesting read on the "secret" Project Mercury Stamp and the "surprise" issue of the stamp on the exact date of that event (February 20, 1962):

That was a proud moment in U.S. history. Sadly, 50 years later, the only way we can get a man or woman into space is to pay the Russians over $60 million per seat for a ride on a Soyuz.
