Meow, birds and fishes, tasty, meow.

Something you are already interested in, writers, books, stamps, dolls.

Shapes of stamps, or shapes on stamps.

Types of cancels, circular, hexagon, scalloped or railroad related cancels or ship or aviation related cancels or postal history.

Something that calms the mind or excites the mind.

Everything to do with water distribution from canals to aqueducts to dams to sewers (Paris, Melbourne).

Make your own stamps or covers. (Crochet a stamp)

I have always wanted to do a theme page with flowers taht would grow together and birds and insects and animals that would be around these flowers / plants.

Life, land based, water based, air based.

How it all connects together, your own thoughts and ideas on the matter.

An idea with stamps used as well as other items to flesh out the idea, to add depth and perspective.

Something that has touched you in some way or that you want to know more of.

Every single *&^%$ thing related to stamps, there being no end to this, a life-long, highly frustrating but at the same time strangely satisfying endeavor.

Coat hangers.

Bottles.

Corn Flakes.

Meow.

I've got to say that everyone has really helped me in making a solid decision here. Any of you politicians????..lol

Rod,
I checked out Sarah Perilli. There's a lot to consider there as well and I probably will join the Yahoo group.

Edwin & Stampvirgin,
What can I say there. How about a hide and seek for the both of you and the first one to find the stamps yells,"SFC winner!"

Like I said, a lot of good suggestions here and I've decided on.......

I have joined odd Yahoo groups in the past Donna,
especially to gain detailed information on
specific countries, overall, I have found them to
be irritating and replies scarce.
Your experience may differ though with topicals.
Good luck

It's not easy organizing what to collect because there's just so much beautiful stuff out there and so little money to buy it all.

As already mentioned, you should collect a topic that interests you. If you go for something just because it's popular, one day you'll probably lose interest because you don't really care for the subject.
Of course, if you go with a topic you like, before starting, make sure there are stamps of it.
For example, I doubt you'll find many stamps with porta potties! (Start the scavenger hunt for these stamps!)

Donna:

Picking up on swabbie's comments, I would definitely recommend you explore the American Topical Association (ATA).

I am not a topical collector, but several years ago, I joined for one year just to learn what it was all about. They have a good newsletter, good information, etc. And when you do decided what topics to collect, they have wonderful comprehensive lists of the stamps in each topic. It is definitely worth $25 a year.

The lists are for members only, but the website has a lot of good content for non-members too ..

Stampgal,

I've got an old hat with little slips of paper in with choices I have made. Sometime, around the 1st of the year, I'm going to reach in and pick 3. Those 3 will be my choice. Though with my luck I'm liable to find that bill I haven't paid yet and was really looking for.

How about a Topical Stamp area called "Eye Catching"?

I think we're all familiar with the standard listings on BidStart, Wensy, etc. Have you ever stopped scrolling because something caught your eye?

I'd look at those things as possible collection points.

I agree. You can't collect everything - if you believe that you can do that then you've never been a parent.
