Interesting idea!
Try looking at China regional surcharges 1940-49. That maybe the largest group you'll find. within Scott.

But be aware of the Manchukuo issues under the occupation by Soviet Russian forces, not listed in Scott.
Another large group would be the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, there were many non-Scott overprints.

However I would gather that the greatest number of overprints on one stamp will be from the United States likely over 2000 different overprints on some from 1938-49, these would all be precancels. Each city would have it's own overprint many had much more then add the fact the USPO allowed business's who send mass mailings to overprint with an authorized abbreviation, plus you then add the factor in that a date & month would be added as well with a new month, of course, each month, you can see how his could add up.

Oops, clicked "Post New Reply" instead of "Add image"

The first lot is 7 overprinted and the original stamp from France. Two of them have a second overprint.

The second lot (Brown 2d queen heads, three lines on the previous post plus one on this post) are not all legitimate overprints (in my opinion) as not all of them were meant for postal usage, but still worth a mention.

Now I will click "Post New Reply"
