I am trying to reorganized my various route 66 philatelic items ie. precancels, pictorial postmarks, cachet covers, etc. for use as a display. I'm going to work something out with the Illinois Route 66 Association to set up a display at their Hall of Fame Museum in Pontiac IL. I've started to come up with catchy thematic titles: Get Your Stamps on Route 66 Postmarks of America's Main Street Mail for the Mother Road Taking the Mail Route on US Highway 66 Mail Call on the Will Roger's Highway Pictorial Postmarks of a Scenic Highway Any thoughts or suggestions?

I like "Get Your Stamps on Route 66" I think it wise not to get too cute with the title, as you may have to appeal to a wide range on ages. Perhaps Join the title to a largish black and white road sign (the shield with 66) Good luck with your endeavor.

Maybe I will make a single page with the lyrics of Get Your Kicks and in place of the town names I'll use one of my duplicate precancels. |

"Route 66" originally recorded in 1946 by Nat King Cole, written by Bobby Troupe.
If you ever plan to motor west, Travel my way, take the highway that is best. Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
It winds from chicago to la, More than two thousand miles all the way. Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Now you go through saint looey Joplin, missouri, And oklahoma city is mighty pretty. You see amarillo, Gallup, new mexico, Flagstaff, arizona. Don't forget winona, Kingman, barstow, san bernandino.
Won't you get hip to this timely tip: When you make that california trip Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

Donna I have to laugh about the "smooth driving ahead" in most cases Route 66 is a bit bumpy, sometimes potholed, extreme alignments 4 wheel drive is necessary, and sometimes the road just fades away taken back from nature. Of course, most of that is because of it being a normal road (decommissioning began in 1977) and lack of maintenance by city, county, and state. Some of the "lost" and unmarked alignments are segmented, dead ends, and only accessible by foot or bicycle due to barricades and local/state highway departments breaking up sections. However, all that being said I love exploring those sections. There is 1 section in Springfield IL that leads into Lake Springfield on the northside and comes out of the lake on the southside.
Smauggie- I like the "Postal Provenance of Route 66". It sounds like a local post name.

Quote: Maybe I will make a single page with the lyrics of Get Your Kicks and in place of the town names I'll use one of my duplicate precancels. Good idea! I was just looking up all the towns recited in the song, and the most all of them are common, low value items; the only exception would be Winona, Arizona (which never issued a precancel) and I understand it's not more than an exit sign off the highway today. |
