I asked this questions in the forum before, but I couldn't find it back. So, I ask again. I am using KaBe album in the past. All my collections are in KaBe album until 1981. I try to buy supplements to complete them, found out that they are very expensive. I don't want to spend thousand of Dollars for albums for Used Stamps that have less value. I decided to make a generic Acid free album with "Hinge free" or SF mount. Does anybody has experience of making stamps album? I open to any suggestion, I especially concern about the price, since I have lots of stamps. Any body know a "generic" brand that has a self stick back?

Using hinge-free pages for modern used stamps is probably a little overkill, although I have met quite a few people who do it. It does look very nice. Steiner makes worldwide stamp pages that you can download and print out as you need them for a relatively low flat annual subscription. Updates are free. You can visit his site at http://www.stampalbums.com/. It can be time consuming to put in mounts if you have a lot of stamps. As for me, I either put my modern used stamps in stockbooks/stockpages or hinge them. Saves a lot of time. But each collector has their own special way of collecting; no right or wrong, just as long as you enjoy your stamps! Hopefully, someone can chime in with a much more useful reply. |

Hi Samuel. I use mounts to mount all my stamps for only one collection, and in that case it is because I hope to eventually replace the used stamps with mint stamps. I usee the Steiner pages. I use regular, heavy paper, as the mounts will keep the stamps from being affected by any chemicals in the paper. |

I have a question on your method smauggie. Doesn't the glue from the mount cause discoloration on the pages over time? I'm no expert but that is the idea I get. I could be wrong. Any thoughts? |

Not if you use the right mounts. Avoid knock-offs, generic brands.
Even the major manufacturers are not free from this mistake. There was a run of Scott Platinum hingeless albums that had this problem. The paper "browned out" where the mounts were affixed. When you flipped the page over, you could see it very clearly on the back. You'd think Scott, of all people, would have known better. |

I use showgard exclusively. No problems as yet. I only started creating the album last year. |

Quote: I use showgard exclusively You should not expect any problems with the Showgard. I commend you for your choice. I've noticed other albums in which collectors used quality mounts, but decided to use their own glue instead of the wettable adhesive provided on the high quality mounts. Of course, the collector did not use archival glue, and you can guess what happened. Sometimes, we have to be careful not to outsmart ourselves. |

Also, never never use tape to affix the mount to the page. The tape adhesive reacts with the mount and will slowly flow, eventually into the mount joints and into the... It's not the page staining that you have to worry about!
I've seen a couple very nice "MNH collections" that were irreparably damaged in this way. |

You can print pages from the "Stamp Albums Web" (type that). You have to pay if I remember 20$ but you have access to worldwide pages. If you do use over 60 pounds cover stock you can find easily to print. For my thematic collections I make my own pages but for countries I use the "Stamp Albums Web". For my topical albums I use AlbumEasy. You have to do a little work to learn it but it make decent pages. Daniel |

Thank you very much for the inputs, after I studied all of them, I decided to use stampsalbums. I am going to make trial print after my printer is fixed. I probably going to use SF mount or Hawid since Shureguard is only half penny less, and I know these two companies since 1971. as far glue concern, I think they are preglued we just have to wet it then sticked it on. But I concern that after the time, the glue will turn yellow. This happen with all my KaBe albums. KaBe is Lighthouse premium album and I am sure they are using SF mount. Their Acid free paper is also start turning yellow after thirty eight years. therefore, I am thinking to use gray thick paper and probably don't have to be Acid free, since the mount will protect the stamps. Any comment will be appreciated. |

There are pH-buffered archival quality papers and albums. There are also archival quality pigment inks that can be used in some ink jet printers. From what I gather as a clueless newbie, that's all you need worry about--paper, ink, and the album and slipcase. I'm planning to make my own album, but am still looking into the details. I have no experience with this, but that won't stop me. Here's the beginnings of an album for my horror topical. Haven't quite figured out how to print at a 20 degree angle. |

I think, the paper and ink is not the problem, since the SF mount will protects the stamps. Unless the stamps slip out the mounts undetected. I never see this problems in my KaBe albums. That is true, it is an over kill to safe stamps in KaBe album, or even self made album in this matter. but this is one of my obsession. I collects stamps, my first collection, since I was 6 or seven years old. I studied in Germany, always send letter home, spend countless time to stick new set of stamps, go to post office on the way to school. My parents kept all my canceled stamps for me. Sending letter home will never happen again now a day, those time is long gone. But I have the stamps to remember, it is precious to me.
To print 20 degree angle, I don't know exactly what you meant. May be this will help. You can draw a triangle with 3 same length/sides, that is 60 degree. If you draw the sides certain size that you can divide in to three easily, draw a line from the opposite corner to that 1/3 point. You got 20 degree angle. |
