For the last 2 years or so I have been sending off for special event postmarks listed in Linn's postmark pursuit and USPS postal bulletin philatelic section that catch my eye/interest. I like to use current stamps that tie in to the theme and try to use personal photos of my son as cachets. Of course these also work with my topical collections of Abraham Lincoln and Route 66.

Check out USPS.com, search for "postal bulletin", open the most recent bulletin 6/5/08(it may take some time to download), go to the philatelic section page 64 and view the most recent pictorial postmarks.
Here is a link to copy and paste:

For example Litchfield IL is having a postmark for their annual route 66 car cruise/festival on June 18-22. I will try to scan some covers in & get them downsized to attach this week. I usually have my hands full with my 22 month old son.

I have more, but I don't think I have the time to scan them all. Some of course were a learning experience in what to do or not to do.

Hare is a postmark from one of my favorite topics, Route 66. Also, it depicts Montana Rabbit from Staunton IL, she unfortunately passed away the following monday after the event and commemorative postmark.
