I first started collecting FDC's and the earliest one I have is 10th July 1967, so I guess it's just over 41 years for me.

Ok ! Great the less than 1 year folks came forward...they are the future of stamp collecting...seriously, with the internet..collectors can progress so much faster..the knowledge is out there for everyone young and old..not like when I was a kid waiting for the envelope of approvals from Garcelon stamp company..so of you remember them..they might even be around yet !

I agree that the newbies are the future and it seems to me that this site has some pretty good ones. I still feel new to the hobby compared to some collectors/dealers I've met the last 10 years. For about the first 17 years of collecting the only collector I knew well was my grandma and I had never been to a stamp show. The only way to get stamps was at the post office, off envelopes, and from Mystic. The internet is wonderful for our hobby, but nothing beats getting together in person.

If you take into account I started in 1968 collecting stamps, then put it away for ump-teen hundred years--it will have been 40 years since I started, but not 40 years collecting-- just the first part of this year found the forum and it refueled my collecting.

Thanks forum!

I'm like you Gussy.

I collected for 4 or 5 years 36 years ago but gave my collection away

I started up again abut 6 years ago. I'll never give it up again it's just too much fun; especially being on this forum.

Dianne

I admit I shelved my collection for several years, picking up some mint stamps here and there and whatever my grandmother would get for me. It was on the back burner for my "college years". Now I have been back to it with more gusto than before, it doesn't hurt that I have more to spend, for at least 8 years.

I started with my Harris Ambassador album in late 1968 or early 1969. I used a labelmaker to put my name and address on it. Soon I had to buy glassine interleaves to keep the stamps on facing pages from interlocking their perfs and becoming damaged as I turned the pages.

Swabbie,
I knew I forgot something. But that answer is all dependant on the poller.

I found my first stamp as a kid from my shop's drawers on 2nd August 1992 according to my diary. It was a triangular one and its unique shape got me interested in this hobby. I also started out collecting coins from that same year. And yesterday I celebrated my 16 years in this beautiful hobby by presenting my coin collector friend who's b'day also happen to be on 2nd Aug. an album full of my extras and introducing him to this hobby. Also my pop gave me about $200 as a gift to go wild buying my hobby items. Cool.
