I ran across these last night and thought I'd share them. I also found two coins in plastic display cases without the envelope/stamps/cancellations.

I've always been a sucker for American History...

Greg

I believe they are called PNC's (Philatelic Numismatic covers) although I could be wrong.

The coins are the size of half dollars. I'm not sure of the coins content (bronze maybe???)but I'm pretty sure they are nothing special. I think they are just a commemoration of an historical era.

I think you're right. I picked up this example back in the early 1970's when visiting the US Mint. As I recall they were bronze and they made them for all the US Presidents at a couple of bucks apiece in their souvenir shop.

Note the one I posted is using the same bust of George Washington but with a non-Bicentennial imprint around the border. I suspect that the US Mint merely printed more of these medallions as the Bicentennial neared as a profit making scheme.

I have 2 of these covers myself unfortunately the 1976 cover is missing it's coin as can be seen but the 1975 cover is complete. It's nice to see a picture of the complete '76 cover so I know now what the coin looked like.

There were actually 5 different medal-covers like this, 1972-76, and they were a U.S. Mint product, not privately made. When I start to sell off my Bicentennial collection next week, I'll be sure to offer several.

It seems incomprehensible to me that the Bicentennial is now 35+ years in the past. Where did the years go??

Now we have the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 to think about.
