To continue forward with a thread similar to the one posted yesterday about the Catskill Mountain House in New York State, I thought I'd share this example.

This isn't my card, but I pulled it from my library web site showing Wentworth-by-the-Sea, a hotel in the outskirts of Portsmouth, NH (technically Newcastle, NH) dating back to the late 19th century that back in its day had many well-to-do guests as its clientele. The hotel apparently had its heydey in the mid-1940's as depicted in this linen postcard:

Sadly, the hotel went out of business in the 1980's and was left to rot for many years. In fact, as recently as the year 2000, the building fell into such bad deterioration to the point that it was threatened to be demolished or it may have collapsed on its own,as shown here:

Fortunately, it was caught in time and was restored to its old grandeur and is now a hotel operated by the Marriott Corporation:

Of course, that restoration came at a steep price of $26 million!

Great set of pictures. So nice to see it restored. Reminds me of one in New Brunswick, Canada - St. Andrews I think.
