Geez. It's a number WE make up to start the system. Examples might be:

001 Aircraft
002 Art
003 Australian Animals
004 Babies
005 Berries
006 Bicycles
007 Birds
etc., etc.
500 Zebras

Sorry! There's so much I don't know--- I thought maybe there's a formal categorization by some organization that I hadn't heard of.

I think it's a great idea, by the way! Is there a way to do it without adding to Bobby's load? Maybe just add the category list to the BST rules and use the Trade thread? Or do we need to use codes? Maybe just say 'I have 3 space stamps to trade for train stamps'.

I thought "categories" would work better, otherwise you get forty different terminologies for "aircraft/aviation," for instance. A number makes everybody choose.

Our Boss is really the only person who knows if this is feasible. The details and the specific stamps are not posted here, that's worked out privately by email between the parties.

This seems like a natural for ATA to tackle. Not that SCF shouldn't seize an opportunity...but I wonder if this is an opportunity.

Even setting agreed-upon categories would be a large (and thankless) job. If ATA won't, and SCF is willing, I agree that it seems like a useful service for the topical collector.

My 2d.

ATA is planning on doing something similar. I believe that it is to sell duplicates instead of trading them. If you go to their site, there is a tab that says, "ATA Shop." This is where this is going to be. I'm thinking they said it would be up in the spring, but please don't quote me on that!

It will be interesting to see how people price what are, by definition, short sets...

My understanding is that the ATA site will be purely topical- not sets or short sets.

For example, let's say you have a set that has a penguin, a tiger, a giraffe, and an elephant. You only collect giraffes so you would sell the other 3 stamps independently of each other. They would be listed separately, so that someone who collectins penguins could just buy the penguin stamp.

But like I said before, don't quote be on this!

I have been facing the same problem since I started my topical collection.
For my car collection it's not really a problem since many countries issue a set just car.
But for my tennis collection a lot of countries issue sports set which include tennis in it. Especially Olympic set.
I found an Asian games set with 16 stamps in it, while I only need one

I just put unneeded stamps into other stockbooks. Plus, now I am moving my collections into stock sheets, so now I'll just put unneeded stamps into stockbooks, period.

And yes, it's a pain when you have to buy an entire set just in order to get one stamp. I especially hate Swiss sets that include totally different subjects.

Cobie if they are U.S. Stamps I would be interested in buying them. I collect U.S. Only singles and plate blocks. Though I am trying to get away from Plate Blocks.

For single stamps in se-tenant blocks, or in souvenir sheets you might consider a careful windowing.

So kehess what did you decide to do with your extra U.S. stamps? I might be interested in buying them since I collect singles, Se Tenants and plate blocks.

You're certainly not the only one with this issue. I tend to just cherry pick for my topical then the remaining stamps I sell, trade or add to my other topicals. Sometimes I just wind up having to spend the extra money for the one or two stamps I want, but that's the life, right?
