Just came across this listing on Ebay. The Scott # is wrong (should be #792 not #794), the cachetmaker is wrong, should be Ioor not Linprint, and the BIN price of $1,199.00 is sooooo wrong, I can't believe anyone would have the audacity to list it at that price:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-794-BLK-...t_2447wt_814

Especially, when a further check on Ebay has virtually the same cover (unaddressed) at a much more reasonable BIN price of $6.95...a savings of $1,192.05 or 17,251% less:

It looks more like he "fat fingered" the number. I'd bet he intended $1.99 or $11.99. I had a friend do that once on his listings.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

Neither. I have one (probably a few) already, not with that cachet, but with an array of other period cachets.

In reality, though, the cachets on those early covers from the 1930's through the 1960's are actually a lot more interesting than the stamps themselves. It was during a period when printing took on a whole different meaning, as it was before the advent of laser or ink jet printers, and the cachetmakers of that day produced quality material on quality paper. Today, most are produced via a PC or Mac, and the quality is just not the same.

I know I'm changing the subject a bit, but I can say the same thing about quality paper and letterhead. I absolutely love looking at the old advertising covers and letterhead and bill head papers of the 19th century. It was a period of such quality printing that nothing today compares to it.

I've shared this before, but if you want to look at some quality advertising and letterhead and printed materials from the 1800's and early 1900's, check out this link. In my opinion, this is a great wealth of examples of "a lost art" of printing--the way it used to be:

I saw a fat finger like this a while back, and very kindly wrote to the guy. I thought he would appreciate the heads-up (since his item isn't going to sell until he corrects the price). No response and the price was unchanged several days later. Go figure.

I was going to consider giving the seller the "benefit of the doubt" figuring it may have been an honest mistake, until I saw another of his listings:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-838-FDC-...t_2741wt_836

As a comparison, the same cover, with the same Staehle cachet and FDOI postmark is being sold on another retail site for $10.80. Not quite as big of a spread in price as the previous example, but still well above "retail" for such a cover.

"Buyer Beware" is the key phrase here, especially when dealing with Ebay sellers.

Can any activity on ebay ever be described as shocking any more?
Surely the sight has managed every foolishness possible by now?
