So I'm in the South Hills south of Pittsburgh and I stop at a stamps store to pick up some mounts. I notice they have three half pound bags of stamps for $9.00. So I bite and buy one, what the heck it is only $9.00 dollars.
To my surprise the bag is fill with all old stamps. The 2 hour drive home is a blank as I started going through the bag while driving. Not a good thing to do but I made the trip home without hitting another car.
Some of the things I found include the CU222 George Washington with the Cuba over print. Three different Nebraska over prints. Several 1870 to 1888 Bank Notes that include the Franklin 1 cent, Jackson 2 cent and the Jefferson 10 cent stamp. I had tons of the carmine or red 2 cetn Washington and about drove off the road when I noticed one had the Cap on both 2's.
In addition there a few Lincoln 222 and Grant 223's along with the 1cent through 8 cent Columbian commemorates. I even found the 401 perforated 1 cent Balboa.
Since these are mostly still all on paper I have many very interesting cancellations which include many full barrels and dates stamps. I have a very nice Grand Central Station cancellation. I remember the oldest date stamp to be in the 1860's but I still have to find the stamp it was on.
I have only touch the surface because most of these stamps are from the 1930's back into the 1800's and many are stuck together so I will have to soak them to find out what they include.
The mix also included several old Canadian stamps along with a handful of foreign stamps.
I was expecting a bag full of modern day stamps and if I had know they were this old I might of bought all three bags just for the fun of finding out what is inside.
I hope to go through the collection in more detail as the days pass but for ow I have to get some work down to pay the bills. I just thought I would tell you about my pleasant surprise on my first kilo purchase.
