The latest issue of Linn's says that there is a hitch in the selection since one of the members of the board which oversees stamp selections has a problem with the whole idea.

According to the link I posted yesterday, it seems that not one, but several members of the USPS Board of Governors have issues with the whole concept:

Quote:
Linn's says Board Chairman Thurgood Marshall wants to know more about the proposal, and notes that recently re-appointed Board member James Miller expressed opposition to the plan at his confirmation hearing. Governor James Bilbray told the magazine "Many of us have reservations about this".

Thanks for the link Russ.

It is a very difficult issue for US Post and collectors.

In my opinion there are just so many image of US people that should be on stamps no matter if they are dead or alive they will always be incredible people.

The first Australian stamp had a map of Australia and a kangaroo on it in 1913.

Very closely followed by the King George V side face issues in 1914. He became King of England and the commonwealth in 1910 and died in 1935.

All living Kings and Queen have been on our stamp in ever since.

As I noted earlier, I think they are probably figuring out what most of us felt from the start - it's a horrible idea.

Only the test of time (and a lot of years dead) can soothe some of the pains caused during lifetimes.

It's one thing to honor those whose opinions, lifestyles and ideas might be controversial or go against the norm, but whose talents and contributions far outweigh the individual (Paul Robeson, for example, comes to mind), but it's another thing to put someone living on a stamp and then see them go whacked or things from their past are finally brought out. Can you imagine if we had put some of our steroid-pumped baseball stars on a stamp because of their accomplishments, only to learn later they were juiced? Or the unknown situation involving Lance Armstrong? Or, as I said long ago, the annointment of Joe Paterno, who, at one point could have been a "great" choice?? (Now, his inactions seem to veer from ignorance, detachment and neglect to criminal.) Hopefully, the USPS can keep its house as clean as it can by keeping this door closed.
