An interesting pictorial cancel in red ink, with flags and eagle, commemorating the installation of the new Postmaster at Wilbraham, Massachusetts.



Frankly, I didn't know such a appointment warranted a special pictorial cancellation, but apparently it does. The local news media also had referenced this event, as described below:

We did a special cancel here for a final train-run. As I recall any postmaster has the right to request a special event cancel, with funds from an outside source to purchase the actual device. As long as the event is not overtly political or religious or otherwise contentious it will almost always be approved. So I would imagine that in this case the postmaster decided to celebrate himself, and probably ponied up the fifty bucks or whatever the device cost, out of his own pocket.

Interesting cancellation alright.

I wish that post offices here did that. If they did, it would make postal history research a lot easier for those of us who keep track of these events etc.
