I will go first with an amusing one. I was told the other day.
A stamp collector in another club (names withheld to protect the guilty) assured me that in America it is illegal to collect mint stamps!!
Only cancelled stamps can be collected legally.

One of those myths that amuse whether it is true or not. I expect one of our American members to let me know?

My goodness, that is an interesting story. I will assure you that collecting mint stamps is both legal and encouraged in the U.S. The only restrictions that I am aware of involve the collecting of mint stamps from Cuba, due to restrictions based on antiquated trade restrictions.
Very Interesting, thanks for sharing.

ts,
So there is an 'element' of truth to it!
The very best urban myths are always based on a half fact.
Makes me want to start saving Cuban mint stamps (smiling)

We've had previous discussion on SCF about the very issue of stamps being held by US Citizens from countries such as Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, etc. Here's a link that will provide more information:

Here's a SCF link to another urban legend that easily can be included as part of this thread:

wt1,
good one.
I have a friend who's a prison officer and stamps cannot be mailed in to prisoners, because they paint them on the gum side with liquid LSD.

Well I'm glad to see that I'm wanted is all 50 states of the Union! Now to get my picture on only the best of post office walls. I think that the urban legend has it grain of truth in that ALL US stamps were illegal to use at the start of of the Civil War (1861)and they reissued replacement stamps so those $%#@ rebels wouldn't use US Stamps and bankrupt the US.
