Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012): http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...736052.storyHow many remember this 1978 US Postal Service ad with Ernest Borgnine promoting stamp collecting as a hobby? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlqFd8yUXZgWithin the past few weeks, reports of recent deaths of Ernest Borgnine (McHale's Navy), Andy Griffith (The Andy Griffith Show), Don Grady (My Three Sons), Frank Cady (Green Acres) ... suggests to me that a series of stamps for 1960s TV Show memories can't be too far behind.

In addition to the PSA link I posted, I find they also did a magazine print ad around the same time (circa mid-1970s). It's a shame he wasn't using his stamp tongs when handling the stamps, though. |

Looks like Borgnine's stamps are in a black stamp mount. No tongues needed, as long as you leave it in a mount. |

If anyone ever deserved to be fast-tracked onto a US Postage Stamp, this is the man. |

Quote: It's a shame he wasn't using his stamp tongs when handling the stamps, though. I don't recall the clerks at the post office using tongs when I bought all the bicentennial issues at my local PO from 72 through 77. |

PO clerks aren't philatelists; Ernest Borgnine was -- that's the difference. But with the stamps being in mounts, I suppose it wasn't all that important of a detail. |

I never use tongs as metal is much harder than paper! I wear soft white cotton gloves to handle my stamps. To take a stamp out of a stock book the best tool to use is........ a stamp!! |

Congragulations Zee on achieving 50 posts..are those tatoos on your chest ? I see the guys at the gym in their 20s and 30s and they have more money spent on ink on their bodies than I have spent on stamps all my life ! |
