Hi Selva,

"I.S." is short for "Inland Section". Many different postmarks with this abbreviation were applied in the main post offices in central London for mail being sent within the UK.

There were also many "F.S." and "F.B." postmarks (for "Foreign Section" and "Foreign Branch")for mail postmarked at these offices that was being sent overseas.

Nice interesting cancellation.

I remember a while back about the thread in SCF on the different British postmarks like this and the triangular ones as well etc.

I have scanned this stamp from my collection of different British postmarks and what I am asking is this: This 'triangle' marking has only the number '779' in it, nothing else. Does anyone in the SCF have any ideas what this is? Is it a post office number??

Any information would be appreciated.

I think this is an Inspector's mark in the "printed Paper" section, but I cannot remember in what circumstances it is used.
