Or in this case a "FIRST DAY OF ISS"? I can't understand how this could happen, as the cover was submitted cleanly and was processed through SFS, as it is still in it's cellophane wrapper and cardboard backing, so how could the last two letters in the cancellation be missing? Maybe some debris gummed up the cancelling machine? In any event, I'll be sending this one back for replacement:  |

Somewhere out there there is a similar cover with the letters "UE" overprinting the return address. |

Seems like fractured postmarks are more common these days. I got one for the Jose Ferrer stamp recently. Probably the machine used for the postmarks may skip one cover periodically. |

Why create a new term when a slight revision of an existing one will do -- we already have "split grills" so why not "split cancels"? |
