I will be the first to admit that the meter indicia is as common as they come. But it's the slogan . . . and well, the whole rest of the cover that makes it really cool (and worth my paying money for).

Strategic Air Command (SAC) - United States Air Force (USAF) to the Chief of Staff of the USAF on official US War Department stationary from before the creation of the US Air Force (note the "Air Corps" subtext referring to the US Army Air Corps, the predecessor of the USAF). It is written attention to the Director of Installations. An installation is another word for military base/camp/airfield/etc.

I can only guess that the base commander was writing requesting something for the Offutt AFB. Perhaps they needed permission to expand the base, or construct a new building.

Of course now they call it the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). Lacks the beauty and simplicity of the SAC, but oh well.

Does anyone find it curious that the cover used a meter franking? If it was US Military and Official Business, wouldn't those designations have qualified the communication for "Official Mail" status and they could have used a Penalty Mail envelope? Or could it be that since it was being flown "air mail" it required the postage?

Nice meter Smauggie

Sometimes the slogans make the grade for a lot of meters.

I was going to start another thread titled "In Praise of Meters - - Again" but, instead, will add them to your thread. A couple of them have fancy designs and others have slogans. Either way, they are great items, in my view anyway.

Smauggie, I am not very sure about the dating of this letter? It says 'Air Force" all over it, was mailed from Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, and was dated June 11, 1950. I think the Air Force was created in 1947, hence this letter was official Air Force matter.
Or am I missing something? Pete.

OK, I AM missing something, and found it!

Bujutsu, great selection. Love the Ed Sullivan cancel. What better indication of the importance of the Man in 1959!
But you must stop showing us your meters now, because I fear you are tempting a certain poor boy in yet another collecting direction.
Shame! The shame of it all!

LOL - I'm sorry James w, honest I'm sorry

For myself personally, I am finding the meters quite interesting. Still cheaper in dealer's boxes too, until they find out more of us are after them.

I agree, that Ed Sullivan one is a beauty. I remember as a kid watching his show all the time. This plus the fact that a lot of comedians used to like ti imitate him too and a lot of them were a lugh as well

I think the word got out on ebay. Hard to find a collection of meters for a reasonable price. US meter covers are averaging $9 including postage.
