value? history? more information? It is blue and looks almost like the same color as the 5 cent washingtons. It is so close in color that if someone had this it might be in a pile of 5 cents as it is that close to the color. I have never seen anything like this and I have seen probably 1 million Washington franklins

It has been chemically altered in some way, either deliberately or accidentally. It will probably fluoresce under a UV light if it was an actual chemical, or not if it was due to long exposure to sunlight. 5 cent W/F stamps are blue.

I agree that the stamp color has been altered by something. I would not think it ti be a misprint because the color blue does not come even close to the 5 cent blue stamp. The one in your photo has a hint of green in it like it had too much sun or maybe someone over cleaned it with something.

Although I would agree with the previous posts suggesting that the stamp was either exposed to light or chemically altered which renders it of no philatelic value, I still believe it is quite collectible, if nothing more than as a conversation piece. A unique item to say the least.

Worth keeping sure, but hardly unique as it can be created anytime using any of dozens of household chemicals. I assure you there are others out there somewhere.

Please post a picture or scan of the entire stamp. The image you posted cuts off the top of it.

I came across this thread while researching an odd pair of stamps in my grandpa's collection.

I also found a Scott 424 in blue, but it is attached to a green one.

I don't know how he acquired it, but I know he wasn't the kind of guy to alter stamps. Even if someone else altered it, interesting to look at...

Colors are a bit more bright/vibrant than the camera captured.

Thoughts?

Yellow + blue = green
Cover the top stamp and expose the lower stamp to sunlight until the yellow fades out leaving the lower stamp blue.
Light damage, but an attractive curiosity.

bcstoess - it might just be my eyes but when I cover the color portion of the pair, leaving just the left border to see, the bottom (blue) stamps paper is more white than the top.

I like to use these as an example of how stamps color can be altered...
the center stamp is the real thing.
