Hi All

Recently there was a test. Thought I'd post one myself. Can you tell the difference between the 1898 Battleship Revenue Stamps between (design differences) Documentary and Proprietary?

You can discount the different colors and words used, and the face values, there is one other way. View the image below, which one is the documentary revenue stamp and which one is the proprietary revenue stamp?

Good luck everyone, hope everybody gets it correct!

Proprietary left, Documentary right. Based on the spacing of the side bars?

wt1 and Partime, both correct.

But there is one difference I was looking for.

Partime, the side bars as you call them are referred to as the ladder.

Keep looking!

Cheers

There appears to be an extra port hole/window in the stamp on the left compared to the stamp on the right??

StevieG, wow, I never saw that.

Later today after I take care of the Cattle I'll add arrows to what I was referring to.

Hi All

There is only one constant difference that I know of (if there are others I'd like to know what they are).

In the first image below is the two stamps without arrow.

In the second image below is the two stamp slightly enlarged with arrows pointing to the horiz. line that is on all of the Proprietary stamp and not on the any of the Documentary Battleship Revenue Stamps Series of 1898.

By the way, this horiz. line on the Proprietary Stamps appears in the same location, but on the left side.

I was looking at essentially the same thing but instead of focusing on the double horizontal lines, I was looking at the diagonal lines at each corner of the Proprietary stamp which is not as pronounced on the Documentary stamp:

Although I haven't gone through my inventory of these stamps recently, in looking at the two examples you scanned, isn't the bottom line border around the Proprietary stamp slightly wider than that used on the Documentary stamp?

Yes, in my example the bottom line border around the Proprietary stamp is slight wider, but it varies among others, so it is not constant.

But you have better eyes than I do.

Good Job.
