Siegel's auction of June 22 just finished and most of the lots were reasonably realistic to the estimates, BUT........

$2.00 Conveyance, Part Perforated (R81b). Radiant color, perfect strike of "Illinois Central R.R., Land Dept., Jun. 18, 1863" circular datestamp, small tear at top left, Fine appearance, a difficult issue to obtain, the last we offered was in a 1996 sale, with 1996 P.F. certificate

$ 2,750.00

SOLD for $10,500.00

The PF only has 5 on their website. I suspect Scott's price will change.

That Sale (Siegel 1100) was entirely comprised of lots sold in a few prior auctions to a bidder that subsequently defaulted. The R81b was sold in auction 1289 in December of last year, also for $10,500. This was one of the few revenue lots in the sale to bring as much or more on resale as in the last auction. A lot of the revenue multiples were resold at large losses, for example the block of 72 of R25a which originally sold for $4,000 was resold for $800.

That will often happen when the first sale is a specialist sale and the second sale is just a general sale. Specialist sales always bring higher prices.

Amazing stamp in terms of the face value and incredible engraving, especially given when it was issued.

Face value is fairly low, the high value of the set is $200, the high value of the second issue is $500 and there is a $5000 second issue essay as well.

shermae, this one would have set you back a few bucks in terms of face value:

But it's a fairly common stamp, about $75-$100 retail depending on condition. There are much scarcer values that are lower in face value, sometimes much lower.

It may not just be that it wasn't a specialist sale - remember that the previous high bidder wasn't playing this time, and if even the second high and third high bidders from the the first sale showed up, the third high person (now presumably the second high person) might not have been willing to go anywhere near as high as the second high person (now presumably the top person).

Possible, but prices in an all revenue sale of a name collector are going to be higher than prices in a general sale with only 52 lots of revenues. It seems a bit odd that this stamp brought the exact same amount in both sales though. Especially with a 20 year old cert.

This stamp was lot 860 in the Larry Lyons back in Jan 2000, at Shreves, opening for 950 and selling for 1450. Not a bad return for Dans investment.

I have no idea what I believed the face value to be when I posted lololol. Gotta stop visiting this site just before heading off to sleep!
