UNITED STATES 1979 "CIA" Invert 1979 $1 tan, brown orange & yellow, brown inverted, n.h. and post office fresh, v.f. This popular stamp is often referred to as the "CIA Invert", as the pane of 100 was purchased by the employees of the Agency at a McLean, Va post office. Approximately 95 copies are available to collectors.

To be auctioned April 29th by Cherrystone Auctions Starting bid is $20,000.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems undervalued compared to the inverted Jenny. A similar number of copies are available to collectors, but the Jenny invert is valued ten times higher than the CIA invert.

Tom:

As a specialist collector of the Americana Definitve Series, I love the story behind this stamp. I'd love to add one to my collection, but 85 of the 100 are in Smithsonian Institution (Postal Museum), and the rest fetch the twenty-odd thousand dollars apiece, when they go to markey.

Rumour mill says that Mystic Stamp Co. has more than the two they have advertised as owning.

I would like to own one too! I think it is as interesting and important as the Jenny invert.
Mystic should be at the show in Boxborough, Mass. next month. I'll ask them how many they have.

Great, Tom!

I'd be interested to hear.

Did you receive my packet, yet?

Yes David, thank you very much for the packet and the great stamps all over it! I got it earlier this week. I have been reading the magazine on the way to work when I am stuck at a red light in Cambridge. What can I send your way? How about a book by Herman Herst, Jr.?

Tom:

Don't send anything. I appreciate your support of SCF, the great job you do as moderator, and the great book on U.S. Stamps (which got me even more into my U.S. collection).

I wouldn't mind having one of those with the missing color ,either! So interesting the whole story behind the stamp. I like the error/freak stamps, too.

the one with the missing color would even make it more collectible, it being rare
