I have a box full of old United States stamps and postcards. Most of the stamps are used. The postcards are blank. I've had them for years and never took the time to really sort through them. There are so many, its overwhelming to me. I've sorted them out by color. They date back to the 1800's and up to the mid 1930's. Any advice on how to determine the value? Which ones to look for that are worth money? How to sell them? There are well over 1000 stamps.
unfortunatly you may have a gold mine or a hoard of nothing, you kinda have to sort it out and look at individual things, the best hint I can give you is look up what you only have 1 of first because if you have many they most likely made many. If you want money for it you will have to do work.
Well? Did you sort through them? What did you find? This is kind of what I want to do. Find a big old box of stamps and go through them. It would be a treasure chest for me.
Actually, I used to collect only USA stamps. I got started collecting WW with an old box of stamps at my local stamp shop. I was good friends with the owner and helped him determine the value of the stamps in the shop when he bought it. He had handed me a box of mixed stuff to look at and told me to make him an offer. All the stamps were in glassines in a shoe box. I saw some foreign stamps and just passed them over as nothing. I looked over the USA stuff and made him an offer of $20. As I was sorting through it at home, I noticed a lot of stamp sets from Luxembourg. I dug out a catalog and found they were worth well over $1500 catalog value. So, you never know what you will find in an old box of stamps. Esp if they are sorted in glassines.
It would be best if you could rent a Scott stamp catalog from the library (Volume 1), sort them into sets, and determine their value. My favorite is the 1938 Presidential Series; see if you can complete the set!
That's how I got re-started....two big boxes of stamps, most on piece (envelopes) some cut squares, a whole smorgasbord of stuff.....and now I'm getting obsessive about digging through them and seeing what I can find. Keep,at it!
