Tips For How To Battle Window Clerks

A digital scale and the USPS post calc website are both key tools. Writing down the mailing cost on the posted item and then being able to tell the clerk exactly how much postage you have on the envelope/package is usually enough to speed up the process. Most clerks don't bother to count especially if you tell them how much you have put on. Most of the comments from my local clerks are along the line of .... "wow I haven't seen that stamp in years" or "are you ever going to run out of stamps?".

I haven't got the package of tracking labels yet. On my to do list.

Maybe it would help if you ask the clerk to use stamps before you do anything else?

"Good morning [afternoon] [evening.] How are you?"

[Appropriate polite response to postal employee's answer.]

"I have this package [letter] [parcel] I would like to mail but it's important that I use stamps rather than a meter strip. Would you mind helping me with this?"

Postal employee presumably says "Yes."

"Thank you. I appreciate your consideration. I always enjoy coming to the Post Office."

Postal employee responds, "Mr. Somebody, I'm so glad you have agreed to take your medication."

I found the video, but it's not family friendly. I won't post the link. Just search "window clerk" and filter for this week. A very combative attitude with postal clerks won't get you far.

As others have mentioned things that do help - preparation, knowledge, effort and being cooperative. When in a conflict, kill with kindness. It will get you a lot further with people and defuse most situations.

I was always a Type A personality, the kind of guy who stood a good chance at dropping dead waiting for the traffic signal to change to green. But after a year of fighting for my life, I have learned to not sweat the small stuff. As far as I am concerned, if you can get up in the morning and get dressed, it is a great day!
