Identifying New Collection

Hey everyone, I just recently got my grandfathers stamp collection, which also contains my great grandfathers stamp collection as well. There are many stamps dating back to the 1800's, all the way to present day. There are also a few shoe boxes full of international stamps.I am having a lot of trouble identifying each stamp. I was wondering if there is either a website or a book, that contains pictures of every stamp that would help me identify each. Any information into this matter would be greatly appreciated!

There are many sources for information about stamps, their purposes and values. Most collectors probably use the Scott's series of catalogs although they can be expensive if you need the whole set. Of course there are many other similar catalogs.

Some stamp sellers have free catalogs and you can get some information fromvarious Internet sites and even eBay if you know the Scott # of your stamp.

If you can scan or describe some of the stamps in your collection there are folks on this site that would be glad to try to help you also.

Welcome to the forum, rdr910. Since you have older stamps, you do not need the most recent catalogs. You can buy a 5 year old set for $50 or less on ebay. Another way to get started would be to see if your local public library has a set of catalogs you can use. Keep asking questions and we'll do our best to help you.
