What do I have here? Is this a 26 or 26A with double left frame line. It looks like the frame lines stop at the bottom and top of the stamp.

It is Scott #26, with the outer frame line re-cut. Scott #26 Type IIa is like Type 2 but the side frame lines do not extend beyond the design. |

This is an easy one to get wrong. It is 100L15, a Type III, Scott #26. Since it is a bottom row stamp you are indeed seeing breaks in the framelines at bottom. The inner line at left also ends near the top of the design but the outer line is in fact continuous. This position is a good example of a TRUE doubled frameline variety, not one of the impostors you will constantly see being dragged out on ebay. |

The framelines of a Type IV, formerly known as the Type IIa, do go past the design in many cases. The true test, short of plating the stamp, is proof of a discontinuous frameline, regardless of where it ends. |

jameswh, your stamp has a natural straight edge at left. The last complete line at left is the guideline between left and right panes. |

For a stamp to be a Scott #25 you need to have top and bottom frame lines (Type I). Scott #25A is same as #25 with the addition of inner frame lines at sides (Type II).
Yours is neither because it lacks the top and bottom lines. |

There is more than enough bottom margin to show there isn't a bottom frameline. That proves it is neither a Type I or II. The stamp is also clearly an A relief position from the top row of the plate. All A relief stamps are of the "damaged transfer" variety. This one happens to be unrepaired which is more common than the repaired varieties. The very straight framelines are a good indicator that the stamp is a Type III, Scott #26.
