I imagine that this is a reproduction but before I give it to some kid I'd like to know for sure. Apparently one of the authorities on this 1843 non-Scott listed issue is one Larry Lyons but I haven't found anything by him online. If anyone knows about distinguishing the reproductions of this stamp/label from the real thing I'd appreciate the info.

The Carriers and Locals Society is an APS affiliate. I couldn't find and specific reference to Pomeroy's Express in the site map, but it may be worth asking them.

It is hard to tell for sure without a higher resolution scan, but that appears to be the original label and not a fake/forgery. Your stamp does not match the forgeries (forgery A through forgery E) as listed in the Lyons identifier book.

Larry Lyons is indeed an expert in these issues. He is the Executive Director of the Philatelic Foundation.

Thanks to all who gave me feedback, and particularly to SPQR who gave me exactly what I was looking for. I'm attaching a somewhat higher res jpeg for what it's worth. It does appear to be like the left block on the page that Don notes, http://alphabetilately.org/US-trains-00a.html
Lacking a Scott value does anyone know what a good copy of this piece sells for? I'll probably put it up on Ebay although I fear it may show up on cover in six months with a $5000 price tag.

It is not a postage stamp of Pomeroy's Letter Express. It is, rather, a reprint, (well after the fact) of a package label used by the express company (not "Letter Express") prior to 1844.The package express company did not carry letters other than so-called money letters and letters related to their freight. The label that was actually used was black on orange-red glazed paper. As a reprint, in perfect condition, maybe worth $15 dollars. In the condition you show, zero.

If you are a train thematic collector, look to Wyman's Independent Mail Company stamps and covers. The earliest train illustrated postage stamps in the world.

A nice example on cover is here:
