IMPORTANT:

There is no contest, yet. Please read the red text below which is just a query as to whether or not this should go forward again for the many new members. Read below the red for what went forward a year ago.

The below was first posted more than a year ago. I put a bit of time into creating the quiz questions from material that could be found on the board at that time, but despite the initial enthusiasm shown, only five members played, and the three winners aren't seen here very often now, if at all.

My wife is in even worse shape than she was a year ago, so I have even less time for all I need to do, but with so many new members and so little play, it might be worth rerunning this contest for the many new members who have joined SCF in the interim. If a lot of people play, maybe someone else could even handle the scoring.

Any interest out there to have this contest again? It would mean some deep digging to find the answers unless they are things you already know. (Only last year's contestants received the answers so, in fairness, could not play again (and should keep them to themselves!).

Just read the thread, below to see what it's all about and let us know what you think!

We will need prizes, and someone to handle them, too.

---------------------- THIS IS FROM LAST YEAR ----------------------

Just had a contest idea that might be worth considering:

Stamp Trivia

A set of questions -- maybe 10-12 or so -- about stamps where all the information needed to answer them can be derived from posts made on the forum. (And maybe exclude old-timers like myself who might want to play along for fun but could have too much of an advantage and end it too quickly.)

See my last post to this thread, below, for...

The 'Eyes' of March Stamp Trivia Contest!

There would have to be a way of controlling it. Only completed entries accepted, not posted to the forum. Maybe a contest deadline date with entries submitted by email. Maybe let comments be made as to how members think they are doing but not posting any answers.

Sounds awesome! You know what happens to members who give outrageously good ideas, of course. They get volunteered! Seriously, any member can run a contest. If you would like to do it, I'll help out with anything you might need, including prizes, just let me know.

Hello Modern....

I think it's a good idea....maybe have first, second & third prizes. I'll put up 100 worldwide stamps to be used as needed.

If this takes off, just give me a whistle. I've got a few pre-1970 lots of countries (off paper) that I could contribute. I just don't want to win them back!

Yeah, but volunteering for this won't cause you to end up in the jungle looking for people who don't like you!

I kinda think this job will be a breeze compared to that.

Only problem with that, is it wouldn't leave many to play the game.

As Laswabbie would say, I think most of us are Old Geezers.

Speak for yourself, my years may say I'm old, but as long as I believe I'm not old, I'm not.
Old Geezer doesn't work for me, what's the proper term, old maid, old lady, old broad?

No one said geezer! This is why I never got into politics.

Have been thinking with Tom's suggestion of first, second, and third prizes, and a deadline style contest, everyone can play because the contest won't end before the deadline.

We don't really know how experienced a collector (old guy, old lady or old broad or whatever you prefer, LeAnn) everyone here might be. Especially people who might join that are not yet members.

OK, Tom t360, I think I have it pretty much all set up. If you'd like to handle the prizes that would be great. Some members have volunteered them and you can have them send them to you. Maybe others have prize material to volunteer. Would suggest only stamps to save on the possibility of having to send heavy packages half-way round the world! Prize contributors should get their material in ASAP so that it can be prepared, described and/or photographed or scanned.

The Contest:

The 'Eyes' of March Stamp Trivia Contest!

A play on The Ides of March, March 15 and the 7 days preceding that date, since many if not most members will be using their 'eyes' in this 'open forum' philatelic quiz.

I like the idea of first, second, and third place prizes... the more merrier... from our other Tom (I guess there are only two Toms).

So prizes will be broken into four groups (possibly mixed/matched from all material submitted).

First prize winner gets first pick, second prize winner second pick, third prize winner third pick, with four groups of prizes so that even the third prize winner gets a choice. What is left can be used another time, and that way even a prize contributor would not be stuck winning their own prize and getting it back.

Contest trivia questions will be posted March 8th and contest will end March 15th, the ides of March, as defined.

Answers will be accepted by email only, with no posting answers on the forum board! Contest will be posted in a new thread and comments can be added to the thread but no answers or hints! That could mean disqualification. First member emailing in the right answers is the first place winner, second one second, etc. If only one has them all (unlikely) then the earliest with the most correct answers wins, etc. with correctness by deadline taking precedence over an earlier but less correct entry. And since each member can only enter once and only their first entry will count, no one can afford to be sloppy!

I already have 9 philatelically sound questions gleaned from this forum from which newcomers to the hobby might learn and by which the more experienced might be entertained. However, since all are two part quiz questions, there are actually 18 as of now. I will be watching for suitable new posts to have at least ten sets of two part questions, so your next post just might be one of them!

This draft was posted directly to the forum. I may go over it from time to time and if any significant changes or additions are made, will post a reply to the thread giving notice of the addition or change to members.

Hope everyone (including those still lurking!) will get in on the fun.

So join us in the The 'Eyes' of March Stamp Trivia Contest coming soon to a forum post near you!

Tom t360 has not objected to handling the prizes, so that would be up to him. He could email his address to members who have said they have prizes to contribute.

To anyone else with prize material to add, just post your intent here and you will be contacted with the address to which it can be sent!
