I found these two stamps in a lot of stamps I purchased. Any help in identifying the cancels would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the stamps:

This is a good opportunity to down load the Skinner & Eno book United States Cancelations 1845-1886 from the USPCS digital library. At the bottom of this page.

The Cole Book Cancelation and Killer of the banknote Era is also a good source, but later than your stamps.

The Raleigh, N.C. is easy. The interwove star in the rays is very distinctive.

The masonic Compass and Square could be from anywhere, the C in the center may help identity it's origins.

The "C" is more likely a badly carved or damaged "G"
The Masonic symbol has a "G" in it.
Skinner Eno has a whole section on Masonic cancellations with the dates observed. You may find a match for yours.

I greatly appreciate the two of you taking time to respond and I apologize. I should have mentioned I own both volumes you mention, as well as six others on cancels, and I haven't been able to find either of these in any of them. Granted some of them, such as Simpson's book on cancels is for issues prior to this while Cole's deals with Banknote era cancels. I was hoping someone may have cancels like these in their collection, or had seen them somewhere else and could shed some illumination on these two cancels.

So, if anyone has an idea, I'm all ears! (or eyes, as this an on-line forum...)

I'm sure some of the you S Cancellation Club members would have seen the Raleigh Star and rays. I recall the newsletter showing 1869 fancy cancels occasionally. But seem their website is being remodeled.

The obliterator is rather intricate, and you can see where some ink is building up, needing a cleaning? I would think an late afternoon cancel would look quite different than it did at 8am. Hard to believe a carved wood killer could be that detailed, and how long would it retain its original look? Is it a manufactured device?

Raleigh's population was near 8000 in 1870, probably saw a lot of use.
