Being new here myself and new to collecting I appreciate the discussion generated by an initial wrong assumption. Thank you Ben for the initial post with excellent images and thank you to the experts for sharing your knowledge!

Just saw this listing on eBay for a "Z grill". It says it has a PSE cert
as an 85c. Any comments??

thats a nice grill stamp Scott #85c, graded VF 80...wish I had one.

Two other similar PSE graded VF 80 have sold at Siegel over last 5 years, range 3250$-4000$.

The referenced 85C on eBay is a very nice used 3 cent Z grill from a reputable dealer. Price is pretty much in line with the market for these as well; maybe just a tad high. I actually considered this very stamp a few months ago when looking for an 85C. The same dealer also has another used 85C that has a pen cancel that is highly unusual in that it consists of two ruled horizontal parallel lines. I loved the clean look of that one but the grilled era seems a little late for pen cancels to me. Still, it is a beautiful stamp.

2016 Scott "yellow pages" for a sound 85c graded as VF-80 was $3500. VF-XF grade 85 was $5000. The seller is in range for retail, but you can do better at auction on the infrequent occasion when one of these happens by. Then again, that is not predictable, since the well heeled tend to wait for the nice ones to show up.

This is the listing for the second 85c with "Z grill" that
Rhett had mentioned being offered by the same seller.
It was graded 85 by PSAG. He is asking $5000 or best for this one.
