My question is. Was there any particular way the watermarks are supposed to be orientated on the stamp? I have the 279, 279b, and the 281. All have the double line watermark, but either sideways, rightside up, or upside down. One even appears to have a single line beside the double line. Is this common?

Those three stamps come both ways according to the Scott Catalogue. The Scott US Specialized will tell you which are more common.
