Hello again,

this is my last ID question of my ID-question-pile here... After that I will show some nice printing errors, one major and some smaller.

I found this 2 Cent 319 Type I, but the color is lake, I suppose. At least I don't see any of the things mentioned in Scott as Type II.

I show scans of other 319 as comparison, also a zoom for details. Which Scott number would be a 319 Type I in lake color?

It's always difficult to judge colors on a computer screen, but the one on the right appears to be Lake.

You are correct in that it is a 319 Type I. The others need enlarging to distinguish which type they are.

319a, 2 cent lake. I have a 1987 Scott and it is listed.

thank you both. there seems to have been changes there? In my Scott Specialized 2013 there is:
319 carmine
319b carmine rose
and so on

and then
319F lake
319F I carmine
and so on

So in my Scott there is no 319a, only 319 without "a". Has the 319a been not accepted as variety for some years?

I now found this stamp:
https://siegelauctions.com/pse-grap...psesymbol=OG

There it is said that there is no price given in Scott? Could you confirm this for Scott Specialized 2016?
Also, the stamp shown in the photo of the link is (in my non-expert opinion) not a clear type I, as there is a line between the left margin and the leaf. In my case this is just clearly, also the color lake, not carmine lake?

My 2016 Scott shows no price for 319a (type I lake). I do recall researching this stamp for a friend. He had a strip of 3 unused, hinged & in poor condition. I did find a pristine MNH copy that sold at auction for $700. Due to the condition of his strip, he chose not to have it expertized.

Scott Specialized, 2017 edition: 319a 2c Lake. Dash in the mint/unused column and a blank in the used column. The dash and blank are indications that Scott does not have enough sales data information to establish what the catalogue value should be. It does not indicated scarcity, nor that high value should be assumed. It just means not enough information is available yet. Your third stamp, I think that's the one you're asking about, does appear to be a type one and, on my monitor, does appear to be Lake. Having said that, doing a power search on Seigel's site, shows three auctioned, one did not sell, one brought $325 and another $750 (all mint examples). That's a pretty good value to me. There are some certified (all mint, no used) examples in the PF data base.

You must be looking at type II listings.
My old 1996 specilized lists both types, same numbering as RWrandy posted. Also gives mint ant used values:

319 carmine, type I $4.50/.15
319a lake, type I 6.25/.35
319b carmine rose, type I 10.00/----
319c scarlet, type I 4.50/.25

Thank you all again, this is exciting. I give you here an image of my Scott. For me it's clear that it's a Type I. The color is always the most difficult. Certainly it's a lake color, I only wonder if such a color could also happen through sun, water, chemicals? The paper seems a bit reddish as well. But the color of the design is lake all round without any shading, this would lead to a real lake color?

I found now the three mint ones at Siegel:
https://siegelauctions.com/lot_grd....lledfrom=lkp

In my opinion they are not too clear concerning type I, at least about the leaf and the shading lines. Perhaps it's because of that that one didn't sell and the others just at the estimation?

Some other stamps for comparison:

This is an example of one of the three sold stamps at Siegel:

When comparing the Scott catalog listings for these, remember that in 2012 the numbers were revised. Quoting from Amos Press...

"...The second editorial enhancement is the reorganization of the listings for the two die types of the 2˘ 1903-08 Washington Shield stamps. The type I perforated and imperforate stamps are now Scott 319 and 320, respectively, and the type II stamps are Scott 319F and 320A, respectively."

Yes, but it's still strange that in my Scott 2013 there is no 319a at all and later (Scott 2016) there it's back again. I read this like the stamp has not been accepted as existing in between. And in 2016 there is only a dash for mint and even "nothing" for used.

What I also see: all stamps I found at Siegel and PF are (in my eyes) no typical lake colors, and in addition not even typical type I. So is there some mystery about this stamp in the last 10 years?

Here are two 319 colors and I believe two lake 319F. I'd appreciate any opinions on the 319 colors:

In the meantime I also found a used stamp, but no information more than a picture. It's from the big Siegel PDF:
https://siegelauctions.com/exhibits/NG_20thC.pdf

This stamp is very similar to mine, both concerning color and type, even cancellation. So, as asked above in my last post, it somehow seems to me that all the found mint 319a's are not very clear identified and accepted stamps. And that there mus have been discussions about the 319a the last years? It would be useful to know what happened to the 319a shown in the PDF (sold, certified and so on).
