Saturday, May 20, the Midwest Bank Note Study Group of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society will hold a workshop on the papers of the Bank Note Issues at COMPEX 2017. We will have a meeting room set up for a workshop from 12-2:00 P.M. We will open with a brief general discussion of paper types, the migration from one paper type to another, and an overview of techniques for examining them. From this we will break out for small group discussion and application of each technique on samples of the "regular" papers as well as silk and ribbed papers. We will have stations devoted to UV illumination, transillumination by visible light, projection microscopy, direct comparisons with a variety of known samples, and an audiology booth for snap testing. We will also have a booth set up to run a narrated version of the celebrated analytical study of the documented standard paper types by Dr. John Barwis. Preliminary plans also have Ron Burns coming to show and discuss the very rare "American Hard Paper" which he featured in Chronicle #253. Participants are free to come and go at will for each breakout segment. If you are a seasoned student of the Banknotes or a collector looking for a worthy specialty, bring your most troublesome Banknote Issues and let us look at them together.
