Thanks for clearing that up, David. If the Leafs were Canada's team I'd have to separate!

Well, actually, back in the days of the "Original 6" (pre-1967), the Maple Leafs were very much "English Canada's Team".

However, with the addition of Vancouver, Calgary (transplanted from Atlanta), Edmonton and Winnipeg (both ex-WHA teams, the latter now in Phoenix), and Ottawa, the Leafs have been pretty much demoted to laughing stock of the NHL because they are so hapless. They are the butt of jokes, as in:

Q: How do you know when it's spring in Toronto?
A: The Leafs are out! (i.e., "out" = no longer playing because of their poor performance, and not "out of the playoffs" because they never make the playoffs!)

and:

Q: What do we (in Winnipeg) now have in common with Toronto?
A: We don't have a hockey team either! (told in the late '90s, after the Winnipeg Jets decamped and became the Phoenix Coyotes).

because we knew Vancouver never really had a chance of winning the Cup, so we all had alternate favorite teams, who could:
