disi123, looking at your example above, do you think this was a re-cutting of the plate, to eliminate the cap?

Hi, Stampcrow... I don't have the specifics on it... I have been
searching for the book, but to no avail, so far... essayk either has
the book or information from online... I'll ask him about it and see
what data he can provide...

Thanks !

Randall

Here's a link to the thread where we talked about your stamp last time, Randall.

The Morris book and the more recent USSS research paper are both referenced with a bit of comment.

In the link I gave you, halfway down the page I gave the full title.

Richard M Morris. The Two Cent Stamp of the Small Bank Note Issue of 1890: Exploring Relief Breaks, Papers, and Shades. Norfolk, MA: Pittsboro Philatelics, 2003.

And in the next post the details on the USSS research paper. It's all there.

so I was going thru a bunch of my 2 cent washingtons. I have a few caps on left, so far found 1 with double caps but stamp corners is cut off and now I keep looking at this stamp. I know the capped right it an inking flaw, but it sure keep you coming back for a second look.

The resolution of the scans is too low to comment about a "cap". As it stands, I see only cancellation ink in the area above the "2".

I agree that a better image/scan would be helpful. The white area directly above the almost appears to be a surface scuff, have you looked at this under higher magnification?

i will try for a better scan but I believe it is a scruff, but after you look at about 400 so far your eyes and brain play tricks.

Looks more like a "crown" than a cap to me from the scan.
