I couldn't find any. Has anyone ever seen a stamp with Voodoo or related subjects on a stamp?
I'm not converting - I just listened to a podcast on Haiti, voodoo, etc. this weekend and it got me to thinking (I know that's dangerous).

That is especially dangerous in your area. Head to the French Quarter and see go see a VooDoo priest/priestess. LOL! Maybe, there is a shrunken head stamp... |

Probably, the word itself, creates problems. To me, it would be particular to certain parts of the globe, Haiti certainly, and Africa. Whilst voodoo, is certainly hard to find on a stamp, the paraphernalia that goes along with it, "masks" for instance are quite common. The masks of the Congo for instance come to mind, there are masks of Romania that certain males put on and chase people around the villages, and Mongolian masks, similar, but these do not fit the "voodoo" in the strict sense. There is something sinister in voodoo I feel. Anyhows, disregarding the Congo masks, I can offer two for reflection, the postmark of Meriden connecticut, and the genius of Goya. |

Hmm. seems I got that very wrong, reading Haitian Voodoo on wiki, it being quite the opposite, a religion as protection against evil witchcraft. I always thought it involved, amongst other things, going into trances and summoning dark spirits.

Indeed, now there's a religion that has received bad press ...and continues to do so. |

Just checked Michel's online catalog for keyword search, and came up with 3 stamps sets including word "voodoo": I'm sure there are plenty more related stamps; I'd just to come up with alternative search terms, LOL. |

The ceremony itself is usually referred to as a candomblé in Brazil and the dieties are called orixás (plur. of orixá). Each orixá in literature (Jorge Amado more than anyone else, I guess) is represented in specific garb and if I remember correctly at one time Brazil did issue some stamps with orixás' costumes. I am not sure these are indeed the type of stamps you were looking for but it's the thought that counts, I hope. |

Thanks Rod, those were indeed the stamps I was thinking of. I don't have them as I only collect up to 1960. It has been such a long time since I touched my mythology books or read Jorge Amado that I only recognize the middle one. It is Iemanjá which in Bahia is syncretized with Our Lady of the Sea (Stella Maris in the Old Litany) patroness of fishermen and shipwreck survivors. The other two I do not recognize at all. |

I am a bit surprised that Togo and Benin have "Voodoo" stamps. Every once in awhile body parts are found in areas of Lome or Cotonou and it is not covered at all favorably by local press.
While not an ethnologue or a sociologue, I suppose that the local religions and voodoo have intertwined for years and most likely have many things in common. |
