more nightmares, anyone?...

Even the name is scary - Gigantiops Destructor. The stuff of sci-fi.
Not, happily, a GB native, but from the Brazilian rainforest. The stamp was part of the extensive GB Millennium issues, and celebrated a new multi-media environmental attraction in Bristol.
I have been keeping my scanned stamps in a separate folder on my Desktop, but I think this one's heading for the delete button - don't like the thought of him lurking in my hard drive...

Yikes! He looks like he would enjoy a dinner of liver, some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

What's the saying about nuclear war.... the cockroaches will inherit the world?

There's a "bug" here in the desert called Vinegaroon, looking vaguely like scorpion, which if it bites you,
gives you the constant taste of vinegar for a few days until the venom is cleared from your system.

That's it!

After reading this thread, I have decided to cancel my planned trips to the Australian outback and the Grand Canyon. I'm sorry.
I will instead be visiting the Enchanted Forest and Toys r us. Phew !

Off to feed the boys,

Thanks to everyone for sharing! Great fun!

Rod I saw that Alice Cooper concert in Sydney with my wife!

Will never forget the 2 lots of 2 people strapped together,
tumbling up and down that 2 story high, rope spider web.
Playing out the roll of a male and female Black Widow spider.

A bit to Gothic for me these days!

I was outside cleaning the pool one day and felt something crawling on my face.
I brushed it off, only to see it was a Redback spider.
I'm glad we don't have these spiders in W.A. though, the Sydney Funnel Web. Even more dangerous than the Redback and they will attack you. Check out those fangs.

Steve

Steve I grow up in Sydney's Funnel Web country!

As a bricklayer I was building a brick corner off a natural sandstone footing. Out of the cracks in the sandstone came the Funnel Webs, 15 in 5mins. I was picking them up with a trowel and putting them in a tin. I showed the owner and said I want the work but not the spiders. A bite and 3mins later your dead!

Your leg would brush a piece of grass and you would jump 3m in the air!

When cleaning a pool one had to be careful when handling the leaves as a Funnel Web spider will live for up to 3 or 4 days under water. They rap a bubble of air around themselves to survive.

Very much nightmare material! I had a lot of close encounters! Too many!

Not quite as nasty as some bugs, but a bug is a bug.

I love this thread! I've never collected bugs and snakes as a topic, but might have to change that. For your consideration, I'd like to see this on an Aussie stamp, if not a tourist brochure. Welcome to Australia!

Rileysan, I suppose it's because the bird-eating spiders are so common, we just forget about them. Most of have one or two as pets. It's charming to watch my cat and the bird-eating spider wrestling over a bird one of them has caught. They're quite clean, and easily house-trained, too.
