Australia had an Australia-wide postal strike in 1968,these labels were sold in Melbourne so that private mail contractors could move the mail. denominations were 6c,10c,25c,50c,and $1.00 in various colors. I'm not sure on the Scott # numbers for these

Harry-
Did every large community, such as Melbourne, provide their own labels to enable private mail service?

Very nice. As I understand there should be more. there is a Modern Local Catalogue of Australia stamps, but it seems to be hard to come by. I've unsuccessfully bid on it on ebay. Canada & the UK also had strike post like these as did the USA. |

Yes Butch Melbourne use them to try and break the strike,I haven't got the catalogue with the different issues so I'm not sure how many more there are or where there from,I'm slowly building my library and that will definitely be one of the books I'll stock Warrehouse. |

To the best of my knowledge, these are the only 1968 labels available, and they're always highly sought after. Very nice. |

Further Info
These labels were issued during an Australia-wide mail strike by the Melbourne firm of H A Bachrach which organised a system of transporting mail and parcels from a central Melbourne depot to various suburban post offices (whose delivery arrangements were not affected by the strike in its initial stages). The emergency stickers had to be affixed to letters and parcels in addition to normal postage Delivery arrangements were carried out by Save Time Services of Flinders Lane Melbourne The service was conducted only on January 18 and 19 when it became inoperable due to suburban delivery men joining the strike
