I snagged the first dozen or so stamps issued by Czechoslovakia on eBay
, in a collection of 26 complete used sets for $4.26.
Here are the first 7 stamps issued by Czechoslovakia, simple but beautiful:
The stamps feature Hradcany castle, Prague. The castle is said to be the biggest castle in the world at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide. Its history stretches back to the 9th century. St Vitus Cathedral is located in the castle area.
The first Hradcany castle stamps, 5 h light green and 10 h red, were issued on December 18th 1918. This day became a memorial day of the Czechoslovakian philately.
Production of the first Czechoslovakian stamps were characterized of post-war chaos. The Czech Graphic Union Printing House wasn't prepared for such a task, the letterpress machine was out-of-date. This created many printing errors, variations, a paradise for Hradcany castle specialists.
